Shikargah Banarasi Sarees — Handwoven Hunting-Scene Motifs on Pure Katan Silk
Shikargah Banarasi sarees are handloom sarees woven in Varanasi featuring the Shikargah motif — an intricate hunting-scene design depicting animals, birds, hunters, forests, and Persian-influenced patterns like the tree of life. The name comes from the Persian-Urdu word shikar ("to hunt"). The design is created using a labour-intensive supplementary-weft technique (the same principle as Banarasi brocade), and a single elaborate Shikargah saree can take up to four months to weave. Most pieces in this collection are woven on pure Katan Silk, the heaviest and most traditional Banarasi fabric. Every saree is Silk Mark certified, billed under HSN Code 5007, and comes with a certificate of authenticity. Prices range from roughly ₹24,000 to ₹60,000. What Shikargah Means and Why It Is Rare
Shikargah is not a fabric or a weave structure — it is a design tradition, a specific narrative motif woven into Banarasi silk. The word derives from shikar, meaning "to hunt," and historically referred to hunting grounds. The motif depicts scenes of the hunt: horses, elephants, deer, tigers, birds, and dense forest backdrops, often combined with Persian and Mughal-era decorative elements such as the tree of life and pomegranate flowers. Because each figurative scene must be woven individually by hand using a supplementary-weft technique, Shikargah is among the most labour-intensive and time-consuming of all Banarasi designs — one reason skilled Shikargah weavers are increasingly rare, and why authentic handloom Shikargah cannot be replicated on a power loom without losing its detail and cultural character.
The Base Fabric and Its Character
Most Shikargah sarees in this collection are woven on Katan Silk — a pure silk made from tightly twisted threads, and the heaviest, most traditional Banarasi fabric (typically 750–1450g). This weight and firmness suit Shikargah well: the dense, figurative motifs need a substantial ground fabric to hold their structure and drape richly. Within the collection you will find plain Shikargah (the hunting motif on a Katan ground with zari detailing) and Shikargah Brocade (the motif combined with denser all-over brocade zari work for a more opulent, wedding-appropriate finish). The firm Katan base and the ceremonial nature of the motif make these sarees especially suited to weddings, festive occasions, and heirloom or collector wardrobes.
Authenticity You Can Verify
Every Shikargah saree in this collection is Silk Mark certified (verifiable at silkmarkindia.com), billed under HSN Code 5007 confirming pure silk fabric for customs and tax purposes, sourced directly from handloom weavers in and around Varanasi — and comes with a certificate of authenticity. On a genuine handloom Shikargah saree, the reverse of the fabric shows the supplementary-weft floats behind each motif, distinct from the uniform mechanical pattern of a power-loom imitation.
Shop with Confidence
Live Video Shopping — see the hunting-scene detail, the zari, and the reverse weave over WhatsApp video before you buy, the same as examining the saree at a weaver's loom in Varanasi. Custom blouse stitching is available with select pieces. Because each Shikargah saree is exceptionally labour-intensive, pieces are woven in very limited numbers — once a design sells out, that exact weave may not be reproduced.
